08 November 2009: RACE 2 - Penrith SIRC, Sydney

Races were conducted under perfect conditions at Penrith SIRC a 200m distance.

Mixed Masters came 3rd out of 14 crews from 12 clubs. We started out the day with 16 paddlers, of which 9 were women, and still managed to come in 2nd in our 1st heat.

Pumped by our achievement, and the smell of success we managed to convince our sweep, Adrian, to paddle and Cameron to put down his camera, borrowed a sweep and headed to the start line for the final.

With 18 paddlers, and coming up against some of the best Mixed Masters teams in NSW, we came in a a very creditable 3rd! A huge effort by all the paddlers and a great start to the season

Mixed Premiers had there best racing in ages and made the Major Final. Even more amazing is that this was achieved with 13 paddlers from the Mixed Masters who had just completed their final!

Mixed Premiers came 5th out of 26 teams racing that day from 20 clubs. Once again, an amazing achievement.

Final word from the Assistant Coach

What a great way to start our new season. We reached two major finals and had a lot of fun as well.

We achieved our goals of winning the starts, bar one, and staying long for the rest of the race. We have huge potential as a club and a team to do great things this season.

Premier Mixed.

From a sweep's point of view, we were strong off the line and a bit more aggression in the first five strokes will really set up the rest of our start sequence. Our slam strokes were powerful and really made a difference with keeping momentum going. Race pace was always set up well and was smooth all the way to the end. Keep reaching forward and catching good water at the front of the stroke. It is hard to maintain a good reach at times, which is why we do a lot of base building training.

One last comment; we really have to get ourselves up for the finals mentally. Think about what we are going to do in the start.  Take time while we are sitting at the start line to run through the effort required, the different phases of the race plan, be totally committed to the race.

I'm stoked with what you did yesterday. Well done everyone. We showed huge potential for next year!

Masters mixed

With the numbers we had, what an effort. Starts were good all day. It felt like we were in control of what we were doing. Same again, force your body forward over the catch, twist and reach. We will win races if we are mentally strong and believe that we can. Well done to all.

Let's keep working hard on and off the water. Keep the big picture in your mind, state titles, nationals, world club crew championships.

See you at training.

Regards, Rick.
